Awake - Introduction
At the time of producing Awake, I began working in oil paint, which was conducive to the layering of forms over extended periods of time. Three series were developed under this theme. Each series involves the emergence of the subconscious mind in the form of a physical body, within a world of its own imagining.
Spirit beings rise up from our material bodies, their senses alert to an alternative state of being. They inhabit a secret landscape and forage amidst the manifestation of imagined growth, in a region above our heads.
This space is illuminated by a 'bright darkness', the kind of light that shines in the mind. This same light penetrates the surface of matter, revealing interior structures and radiant skulls underfoot that create a ground plane to all the images. They are a crowd scene as viewed from above, in the transparent light of the mind.
