Out of Our Heads - Introduction

Many works on paper were produced between the years 2000-2001. Periodically, I immerse myself in the production of large bodies of work so as to unearth imagery that needs to come to the surface all at once. This was a time of transition between studios, so working on a smaller scale was also convenient to me.

I developed themes previously established, while advancing these themes in unexpected ways. Exhibitions were formed out of an accumulation of these works, in which an abundance of information was displayed together. I came to rely upon the juxtaposition of both related and incongruous shapes and colours in the works to provide me with new ideas and directions.

The majority of these works were on paper, though some were produced on board to accommodate collaged elements and  the use of oil paint. Other materials used were gouache, ink, pastel, charcoal, pencil and acrylic mediums.

Some works examined the interior of my studio space, as if it were a vault within my head from which I seek for secret openings into spaces beyond. Other groups of images continued to explore the form of the enchanted mass of the human head and the eye as a fount of illusory energy.
