Out of Our Heads - Hatch

The miscellaneous group of images on this page was produced between 2000 and 2001; they portray the human head as a kind of magic stone that gives rise to various spirit forms.

Rarely have I produced an image without some direct reference to the human head. Generally a head form is included as a starting point—a nucleus from which all surrounding energy is generated.

Around the time of producing Out of Our Heads, I started working more consistently in visual notebooks.

The head is an integral, elemental form within nature, its materiality, thinking processes, and sensory detection indistinguishable from surrounding ecologies.

Many of the facial forms that are present in this body of work were produced by tracing the outlines of my reflection onto a mirror and printing these wet marks upon the drawing surface. This was a way of transferring a direct impression of my own visage onto the work, like the petrifaction of my reflection. The head then appears as a pod, or seed, from which thoughts are projected.

Sometimes the facial forms become like a fruit in which insects breed. I am aware of the 'flesh' of an image--that it is an externalised appearance.

Although the space in which these forms are depicted is an internal region, the apparition is the outside, the skin. I think of these forms as skulls made from fertile flesh, like a fruit split down the middle or like the left and right lobes of the brain.
